Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause thyroid damage : thyroid enlargement, decrease in metabolic rate, and hypothyroidism.

Inhaled

Causes respiratory tract irritation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic exposure may cause thyroid damage : thyroid enlargement, decrease in metabolic rate, and hypothyroidism.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Rinse mouth. Give water to drink. Induce vomiting. Never induce vomiting in unconscious or confused persons. Seek medical advice.

Eye

Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough rinsing. Seek medical advice if irritation persists.

Skin

Remove all contaminated clothing immediately. Wash off with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical advice if irritation develops. Launder clothes before reuse.

Inhaled

Not likely to occur. Avoid breathing dust. Seek medical advice after significant exposure.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

An exposure standard has not been established for this material by Worksafe .

3.2 Engineering Controls

Provide adequate ventilation to maintain airborne concentrations below applicable workplace standards, including local exhaust ventilation.

3.3 Personal Protection

In case of dust formation use dust mask. Wear suitable gloves, eye/face protection and other general industrial clothing to minimise exposure. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Material will not burn.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Avoid dust generation. Use only in well-ventilated areas. Keep containers tightly closed and in a well-ventilated place (cool, dry and dark). Keep away from acids and oxidants.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

EPG No. N/A

Shipping Name AMMONIUM THIOCYANATE

Hazard HARMFUL

Risk Phrases

R20/21/22 Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.

R32 Contact with acids liberates very toxic gas.

Safety Phrases

S2 Keep out of reach of children.

S13 Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Avoid raising dust. Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus.

Collect as mush as possible in a clean container for (preferable) reuse or disposal. To clean the floor and all objects contaminated by this material, use soap and water.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility (most probably by controlled incineration).

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Material will not burn or explode. May cause oxidisable materials to burn or explode. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of H2S, HCN, NH3, CS2, COS, CO, NOx and SO2. Contact with acids liberates toxic gas. Stable under recommended storage and handling conditions. Reaction with strong acids, and strong oxidising agents. Avoid contact with metals.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. In case of fire use (preferably) water. DO NOT use dry powder type extinguishers. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions.
